This wasn't always true, but Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it via "The Ember Island Players," a cherished segment from its final season which is now getting an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.

The full Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced recently. Containing five Secret Lairs, and while one titled "My Cabbages!" is certainly humorous tribute to the show's most famous minor character, the remaining sets seem somewhat lacking creativity, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."

What makes this segment remains memorable

Fans of Avatar fondly remember this installment, which acted as a recap of the hero Aang and the group's adventure leading up to the conclusion. Different from standard summary installments, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated from financial limitations or production issues. The creators truly wanted to give fans a moment to recap the show's narrative, however, they opted to approach it inventively.

In the episode, the heroes watches a stage show based on their adventures in a theater located on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The whole thing is factually incorrect, cheesy, and utterly comical. It succeeds since it plays with the characters' perception about themselves, setting them against against how the world (and particularly the Fire Nation) perceives them. It has the perfect balance of meta-commentary, and it becomes possibly the best adaptation of Avatar we have had.
