An Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to book accommodation upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering towards a gaming venue, believing I might spend those hours somewhere that was open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing the admissions interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

I must have looked out of place as a young woman saw me wandering around the city center and wondered if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity many times over. The world needs more folks like that woman.
