Ashes Pre-Series Trash Talk Escalates as Broad Calls Australian Team the Worst After 2010

The war of words before the Ashes is escalating further, with ex-England bowler Broad declaring that England will confront "probably the worst Aussie squad in over a decade" on tour this season.

David Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Doubt

Broad's assertion came as a reply to David Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – predicting a 4-0 victory for the home side. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner commented.

Australia have not lost a men’s Ashes match on home soil since England’s series win in the 2010-11 tour. The subsequent 5-0 whitewash in the following series – on the back of seven defeats in their last nine matches – was followed by 4-0 Ashes triumphs in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Team Uncertainty and Injury Concerns for the Hosts

However, the No 1-ranked Test team, who have lost only one of their last thirteen series, approach the forthcoming contest with uncertainty over the makeup of their top order and the health of Pat Cummins, who is doubtful to play in the opening match at the Perth stadium because of a back injury.

"It’s very, very difficult to triumph on Australian soil as an English team, or any visiting team," Broad remarked on his podcast. "Australia have to be strong favorites."

"The Aussies face the greatest expectations because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got question marks over their squad and concerns over their captain’s fitness. It's not unreasonable in believing – this isn't merely a view, it's a reality – it’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010. And it’s the best English team in over a decade. These factors match up to the fact that it’s going to be a brilliant Ashes series."

Parallel to 2010-11 Series

"Australia have been highly stable for a prolonged duration that you just knew who would open the innings, who would bat, which bowlers were available, and they lack that certainty now. It’s very much a similar situation to the 2010-11 period when England traveled and emerged victorious. The fact of the matter is the Aussies typically need to underperform to lose in Australia and England must excel. England have a great chance of being very good and Australia have a decent chance of underperforming."

Team Decision for England

A major issue for the English camp remains their choice at No 3, with Pope and Bethell contesting the spot. Alastair Cook, whose 766 runs paved the way for the visitors' series victory over a decade past, believes it would be "strange" for Stokes' team to abandon Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the last three years.

"I'd select Pope at number three," Cook stated. "In my view it’s quite an easy choice. They have someone who’s been part of this buildup for several years. He’s captained the side, he’s played some extraordinary innings for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He knows how to score hundreds in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I believe that changes the whole dynamic of what they’ve built up over the recent years."

While hailing Bethell as "a hugely gifted cricketer", Cook added: "It would be a big, big gamble [to pick him] because if that doesn’t work where do you move back to, a player you recently discarded? They’ve invested so much in people like Pope and [Crawley that it would be highly odd to make a switch at this stage."

Leadership Change and Broadcast Team

Pope has been succeeded by Brook as England’s vice-captain but, according to Cook, that will "ease the burden on" the Surrey right-hander.

"They’ve been proactive on that, considering in case of an injury to Ben Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he appears a natural fit. That will just relieve Pope. I believe it won't undermine him. Certainly it will have hurt him because anytime you get taken off a leadership thing it isn't perfect, but I doubt it undermines him."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of TNT’s coverage of the series, and will be joined by former Ashes champions Steven Finn and Swann as on-the-ground pundits. The channel will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with play-by-play announcers Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the UK, while the trio provide co-commentary from on location.
