The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
The California governor has emerged as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, employing his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would expand the party's House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to cut government money from the state and warned revoking the power to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," Duffy declared, after a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a recent release addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
A recent study found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters said that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an average of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom commented while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
