Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The gang of attackers invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
