A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.
The motive of the shooting has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.
Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.
He had spent several hours at the site managing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, as per local media.
"It is alleged the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," authorities stated.
Surveillance tape showed a man with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the incident.
Important clues, like bullet casings, were discovered at the scene.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.
"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to find their location," remarked an authority figure.
His sister, a close relative, said the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the citizens to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the incident, noting this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's children.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local broadcasting platform.
In addition to his media career, Stock was involved in various business ventures, including private security, providing elite guarding services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in tenant removals.
His murder has caused national trauma and prompted an wave of remembrances from his audience, the authorities and various organizations.
A senior figure remarked he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.
"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.
A political leader commented the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his influence "will be remembered".
