Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
