International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Remains of Captives in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel joined members of Hamas into areas of Gaza still under IDF authority to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Captive Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on 10 October, the group is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has agreed to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of fifteen of those held captive but none in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in areas beyond the ceasefire boundary designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Role as Neutral Intermediary

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a party to the conflict as the group searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the organization.

The spokesperson added: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was had no part in the discussions.”

The official further clarified: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

Under global legal norms, it is the duty of the sides involved in a hostilities to locate, gather, and recover the bodies of the deceased.

US Demand and Regional Search Efforts

On Saturday, the American leader delivered a two-day demand to the militant group. “Hamas is going to have to begin handing over the remains of the deceased hostages, which include American citizens, quickly, or the other countries participating in this significant truce will intervene,” he posted on his online channel.

As the 48-hour deadline neared, the group, accompanied by the ICRC, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were granted permission by Israeli authorities to search for bodies past the boundary marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An official representative said the delegation would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the search.

Authoritative Verification and Press Reports

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to access areas of Gaza under military authority to look for the bodies of hostages, together with Egyptian and Red Cross personnel.

“For this purpose, representatives were permitted to pass the designated boundary,” the source was quoted as stating.

Footage published by a media outlet appeared to show individuals of a specialized group – part of the organization’s armed faction responsible for holding captives – escorting a humanitarian transport in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside IDF jurisdiction.

Difficulties in Finding Hostage Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of Israeli hostages has become one of the most delicate issues in the ceasefire reached between the parties. However, the attempt to locate the remains has proved challenging from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, buried under the rubble.

Diverging Claims on Body Location

The group has stated it does not know the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its teams that had been holding the captives and were allegedly killed during military strikes.

In contrast, an official representative asserted that Hamas was aware of the locations of the remains. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Disarmament Discussions

Although the American leader has acknowledged that a portion of the remains are hard to reach, he said that “the rest they can return now and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“This could be related to the surrender of weapons of Hamas,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained guarantees from Hamas that the faction will disarm, though no clear timeline has been set. They remains hesitant to give up its arms without solid assurances about the future of its fighters.
