‘It’s heartbreaking’: how 30 confined white whales are now tools in row over inhumane treatment.

Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie Botts is an adorable small “ham sandwich”. The whale Orion – called “Onion” – is a big but guardian-like companion. Zephyr has “endless energy” and wiggles like a worm. Lillooet is the “most affectionate” with a gentle spirit.

Thirty captive marine mammals in a Canada-based entertainment facility have been caught in a tussle between a defunct facility, public officials and advocacy groups.

But those most familiar with the whales say the intense controversy over their future often ignores the nuances of the whales who, after living their entire lives in enclosed habitats, have been closely studied by the people who interact with them daily.

After the national authorities blocked the export of the belugas to a foreign facility, the embattled amusement park near Niagara Falls where they are held warned to euthanize them unless the federal government covers the upkeep of keeping them alive. Canada’s fisheries minister has rejected that ultimatum, placing the thirty whales in an increasingly precarious circumstance.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Researchers say that belugas’ neural makeup, along with their sound replication, problem solving and communal behavior point to they are highly cognitive creatures – something Kristy Burgess discovered first-hand.

Burgess spent a significant period as a beluga trainer, a position that required building relationships of the aquatic animals.

“Building up those bonds over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of love. At the outset, they’re very cautious of you,” she said. “In time, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so wonderful and fulfilling.”

Burgess knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was nevertheless surprised by the nuances and idiosyncrasies in their personalities. She cultivated a particular love for a pair of whales with contrasting natures.

“One whale accepted me. The other demanded work,” she said. “They transformed the way I understand connection.”

Public Concerns and Facility Decline

Her relationship with the whales developed against a backdrop of rising activist criticism to their captivity.

During her three years at the facility, multiple belugas and the park’s single orca, Kiska, succumbed. In all, 19 belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a statistic which the park attributes to expected lifespan, but which activists say reflects the substandard environment in which they were housed.

The park did not operate to the public over the summer, but Burgess says she witnessed firsthand effects of the cessation. “Concrete is breaking off from the tanks because they’re falling apart and not being fixed. The whales are curious and so they take pieces and swim around with chunks in their mouth. It’s distressing to see.”

The park did not reply to a inquiry, but earlier stated: “The whales … receive far superior health care and around the clock attention than any human in the United Kingdom, or anywhere else.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

Burgess was dismissed from the park in early March following the death of a beluga, an ailing beluga the park staff had to euthanize. She said the facility suspected information of the incident were leaked to the news outlets and she was released shortly thereafter.

The uncertainty over the whales’ outcome has left Burgess and staff members in despair. She says the facility’s ultimatum to kill its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “extremely difficult” endeavor, adding any efforts to euthanize even a single beluga would require “significant manpower”, trucks and heavy equipment.

“It cannot happen in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

She supports calls for the whales to be transferred right away from the facility, with its failing enclosures and shrinking team.

In late September, Canada’s government official turned down a proposal to transfer the whales to an overseas location.

“Granting the application would have meant a continued life in captivity and a return to public entertainment,” the minister commented. “As the public, we know that whales should be in the ocean, not in pools for our enjoyment. I could not in good conscience permit an export that would continue the conditions these belugas have endured.”

But Burgess said the official’s statements reflect a wider misunderstanding of the circumstances of living conditions for belugas living their whole lives in enclosures.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have spent their whole lives in confinement and they will need human care for the remainder of their lives,” she said. “Many just don’t comprehend that it’s not as simple as saying ‘end operations’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As authorities struggle to find a answer, ideas have emerged, some of which have questionable practicality. A suggested plan called for the belugas to be released into the open waters of the Arctic – where whales are a important part of nourishment for Indigenous peoples.

A suggested sanctuary in the region of eastern Canada, which now received regulatory clearance, has been contentious. The prospective location, which includes a large area of protected cove, doesn’t yet exist. Supporters remain hopeful that it could in time represent a long term resolution for eight of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among caretakers she’s consulted, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “only an trial” in the whales’ future.

Others say the idea of a refuge indicates a broader global shift away from captive facilities and could represent a viable solution in the coming months.
