Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
