As he approaches his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to achieving success.

A Look Back: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his only top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “Yet it's about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal played just after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

As second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries over the course of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come in the immediate future.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, emphasizing the daily requirement to validate his position. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as paramount. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad heads into the Everton match dealing with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
