Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are due to be low, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Drop Even More

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather could to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
