New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to support Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to energize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this election is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
