The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, did not confirm this decision promptly after his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will always live inside me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
