Out of all the mature cartoon movies I’ve ever watched, nothing has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced finale of a graphically gory as well as overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based filmmaker created a dark, bleak , frequently brutal universe with several minor , desolate glimmers of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to expand animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was more an attempt to convey a universal, cross-cultural theme about “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That idea is expressed through a band of vividly colored bears , obviously modeled after a famous series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a culture centered on warmongering as well as the war machine, many of the bears are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that claims them they previously were masters of the woods, until these creatures expelled them.
A few did not entirely accepted the propaganda, , choose to sample narcotics and fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these bright beings display genitals , obvious libidos.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the battle with unicorns becomes a path to power — and specifically to supremacy above his more tender, nicer brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey is a bully and an apparent sociopath , and while horror dominates his squad and claims his comrades individually, he grabs progressively power personally, through ever more violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are enduring their own nightmare, as an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it appears as a comedy,” the director commented. “But then it becomes a more intense and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it’s a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like among the playful features from a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in permitting animated figures swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Afterward it evolves into closer to a darker film by that same artist, with increasingly explicit brutality and a tangible link to the actual tragedy of war.
Ultimately, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear that makes the film a perfect Halloween watch starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted fans of gore, for lovers of graphic films who wish to view a film they haven’t ever viewed until now, and can endure a story which delivers absolutely no punches.
See it in a dark room free from interruptions, and that ending will dig into your mind and linger.
