The Ashes series Individual Ratings: Which English Cricketers Earned a 1/10 Grade?

'Top class' Head Century Has Australia Cruising To Win Over England

English Team Individual Ratings

Zak Crawley – 1

Expected for Aussie conditions however recorded just the fourth Ashes pair by an English opener in just a handful of deliveries.

Ben Duckett – Five

Got beginnings in both innings. The way he got out on Saturday was when things started to unravel for the English side.

Ollie Pope – Six

Appears improved for technical tweaks. Opening match of a series tends to be his best, then it goes downhill. The team require him to build on this.

Joe Root – 1

Far away from his maiden century in Australia. England require the nous from their star performer to have any chance to come back from this defeat.

Brook – 5

His half-century in the first innings was skittish, yet important. Awful shot in the follow-on.

Ben Stokes – 6

Came back from injury to take a five-wicket haul, but looked out of touch with the bat. Lost control while fielding against Head's assault.

Jamie Smith – 4

Might possess the game to succeed in Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face plenty of short bowling going forward.

Atkinson – 5

Involved in the impressive England first-innings bowling performance and attempted to carry the fight with the bat in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that collapsed during the match.

Brydon Carse – Five

Comparable to the previous, plus the spice of getting dominated by Travis Head.

Archer – 5

Looked impressive while bowling initially and proved the top of a bad bunch later. Might yet have an impact in the series.

Wood – 5

Went wicketless, yet extremely impressive to just get on the field considering his absence.

Australia Player Ratings

Jake Weatherald – 6

First-timer had tough luck to face against Archer early on, then contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Khawaja – Three

An unusual Test. Appeared fit and had time off the field. Held on to several key catches in the slips, but also looked slow in the cordon. Gets a mark due to his injury which enabled Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – 7

An effective return to the team. Absorbed the English pressure more effectively than most initially, then backed up Travis Head in the second.

Smith – Five

Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Needless before the game comments on Monty Panesar.

Travis Head – 9

Possibly unfair not to get a perfect score, but he played a pretty poor shot in the first innings. His follow-on hundred was an all-time great innings.

Green – Five

Took the key dismissal of Pope early. Shaken by a Wood bouncer when he batted. Barely needed in the second half.

Carey – 5

Tried an aggressive response against the English attack on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.

Starc – Nine

Carried the weight of the bowling in the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood achieving the first Australian Ashes series 10-for in 20 years.

Boland – Six

Below top form in the first innings. Got better later to spark the English collapse.

Doggett – 6

Solid debut. Quite able stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon – Two

Virtually an onlooker during a game dominated by fast bowling. Possibly picked up an injury when struck by Mark Wood.
