Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its much-debated sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.
This deal, estimated to cost around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since faced significant scrutiny.
The backlash stems from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 militia in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.
In February, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the government of the DRC by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat ThérÚse Wagner to talk about the deal.
Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a public entity.
It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their following across the continent.
Nonetheless, the deal has now ended after both parties âmutually agreedâ to part ways.
âTogether, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership â promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to explore Rwanda, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,â stated an official Arsenal statement.
The release further noted that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches enhance their abilities and inspire greater participation in athletics nationwide.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, portrayed the arrangement as a âmajor expeditionâ and asserted it had been âadvancingâ the club's ambitions.
