Over many years, I had little interest of online competitive titles. I engaged in numerous of them with my friends, but few held my interest. My aim was poor, and felt like more of a hindrance than aid to my squad. Subsequently, 2016ās Overwatch happened and presented me with a character and an ability that's remained memorable ever since.
At first glance, D.Va, a gamer girl turned child-soldier who commands a MEKA, wasnāt the sort of character that would attract to me. The sniper Widowmaker was more my style, with her dark aesthetic and measured speech. But D.Va possessed the advantage of being the role I prefer: a defender. The one who soaks up all that damage while shielding attackers and support classes. Better yet, D.Va has dual modes: her pilot form, in which she runs around with a gun, and her MEKA configuration, in which sheās seated within her MEKA. This duality make her pretty unique, but another feature that makes her stand out among her fellow tanks, and is why I ultimately adored her: her close-quarters and mobility skill, Boosters.
Thrusters represent a skill that enables the MEKA pilot (in her MEKA form) launch into the air, providing a velocity increase and allowing her to fly forward for a set distance. Additionally, players may alter course while airborne, opting to rise onto a higher level or divert completely and navigate past barriers like turns or the objective. This grants D.Va a agility and unrestricted motion that none of the other tanks can truly emulate ā not even Reinhardt with his charge ability. Her Thrusters is ideal for my approach: I like to soak up the damage and protect my team, while having the option to retreat if it gets gnarly so I may reassemble ā it makes me feel indestructible, even though thatās never really the case.
The Thrusters ability isn't solely for movility; it also inflicts harm to foes in its path.
Thereās even a damage element to the Thrusters skill. If enemies get in the way as activating Thrusters, they are knocked back for 25 damage. I assure you, thereās nothing more satisfying than eliminating a troublesome Ashe by bopping her on the nose with your MEKA. Thatāll teach her to try and snipe you from afar.
The hero might not rank as the ābestā tank in Overwatch 2 currently, especially when youāve got heroes like certain other tanks whose pure defensive skills make them a superior choice for present strategies. But sheās also one of the most unique characters Iāve ever played in a multiplayer game. I donāt think there really is a D.Va equivalent, and believe me, after playing games like Marvel Rivals after falling off Overwatch 2, Iāve been looking for a replacement for D.Va, and my next Boosters, for years. The truth is, with extensive time as her, I feel like there isnāt ever going to be as fun and innovative to play as she is. Despite any issues Overwatch 2 might have, hero creation and skills are definitely not included.
