The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
