Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 at the Heat.

The star player was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half during an accidental coming together with teammate Spencer Jones.

His teammate stepped on the foot of the big man, and he immediately fell to the floor grabbing his knee.

The veteran player, who tops the league season in rebounds and assists, posted 21 points and eight assists in the contest before sustaining the injury.

He will have an scan on Tuesday to assess the severity of the injury.

"Immediately, Jokic realized he was hurt," commented Denver coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player who is injured, it's tough to see, especially somebody as important as he is. We'll find out more tomorrow."

"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, right now, I'm more worried just about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of facing something of that nature."
