Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Leader.

In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Victory

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Campaign Focused On Security and Migration

Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely built on promises to combat rising crime and radically reduce migration.

He frequently cited foreigners, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.

His policy ideas featured U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost border.

Amid a Continental Shift

Numerous commentators view Kast's victory as part of a larger rightward shift in Latin America, similar to recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further frame it as a extension of the regular rotation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Ruling Without a Solid Majority

In spite of his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to command an overall majority in Congress, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are counted together.
