Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
