Watkins Maintains the Advantage - But Calvert-Lewin May Yet Make the International Squad

Only one goal in his initial ten top-flight games this season had plenty of questioning whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's best days were over.

But, a just four weeks later, he has become the most talked-about forward in England following bagging seven goals in six consecutive games.

His most recent goal, in a tie versus Sunderland, elevated his tally to eight, seeing him become the highest English scorer in the Premier League this term.

A Stunning Resurgence

The 28-year-old moved to Leeds United on a Bosman move in the summer, following a nine-year spell with Everton that was hampered by fitness issues in its latter stages.

But, the statistics supporting his revival in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 formation are truly notable.

His six-match scoring streak places him in prestigious company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more straight Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane never managed a run this long - his top stands at two distinct five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring run for Leicester City in 2019.

The Secret to the Purple Patch?

What is behind Calvert-Lewin so tough to stop in the past month? A recent opponent's manager described it perfectly.

"He has the ideal timing," the manager stated. "He's smart and a really good striker and he found the timing to arrive at the perfect moment."

That nose for goal and positional sense inside the 18-yard box was what made him a popular figure at his previous club.

Analysts highlight the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a key factor, allowing more players to enter the box and occupy defenders, which has given the striker a little more space.

"He is a archetypal centre-forward," noted a former professional. "For the goal... it was a exquisite little flick beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."

"I've endured a lot since then. Lots of highs and lots of lows. A test of resolve and I've hung in there and kept going... I've had faith and this is the result."

His manager has shown complete confidence at this rich vein of form, reiterating that the player is "one of the best strikers" in the league.

International Dilemma

Calvert-Lewin's return to form has inevitably fueled conversations of an England return.

The former Sheffield United player has eleven England caps, scoring four goals, but has not played for the country since the last European Championship.

Analysts believe the striker will be in the mix for the World Cup squad if he can maintain this standard.

"He looks as sharp as he has in a long time," one said. "If he maintains this level of form... then he's going to be in a discussion for a World Cup place."

Stiff Competition

However, the battle for places behind Harry Kane is incredibly tough.

Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, following a decisive brace versus Chelsea, is currently considered to be in front in the hierarchy, according to some opinion.

"If you look at the two players, Watkins holds the advantage in terms of using his speed to stretch teams," it was noted.

"He also holds the advantage when it comes to making a significant impact at a big competition."

In the end, whether Calvert-Lewin will be the squad could hinge on how many natural strikers the national team coach decides to select.

"I think it might hinge on whether the manager includes two or three centre-forwards," an expert summarized. "If it is three, he definitely has a chance."
