In the wake of the passing of the celebrated actress at 79 years old, the acclaimed director has shared a lengthy tribute honoring her legacy and their enduring connection.
In a freshly written piece, the filmmaker, 89, described their shared experiences from their first encounter in 1969 amid rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, across their multi-year relationship and the numerous movies they collaborated on.
âWith the passage of time, I directed pictures for an sole critic, Diane Keaton,â Allen expressed. âI ignored a press commentary of my work and was concerned exclusively with what she had to say about it.â
He further noted that she was âunique among people the planet has encountered or is improbable to ever experience anew,â and that âher smile and laughter illuminated any space she walked into.â
Keaton passed away after falling ill at her home in Los Angeles. The actor had been less visible for a period of time, and a confidant revealed that although no specific condition had been announced, her health had declined quickly, with several of her intimate companions in the dark that she was suffering.
Her death nonetheless appeared to be a shock even to her inner circle.

The actress remained a loyal defender of Allen after the resurfacing of a 1992 abuse allegation made against him by his adopted daughter during a legal dispute.

âWoody Allen is my friend and I maintain faith in him,â she remarked of the allegation when it picked up renewed momentum as part of the activist wave. âIt may be worthwhile to review the television segment from 1992 and see what you think.â
In his recent autobiography, Allen referred to her as his âguiding lightâ; the person whose view counts the most.
Commenting in a recent interview, Keaton expressed: âHe was so incredible. It always was really unique to be with Woody. He was wonderful. He was all that and more, and he continues to be [so] to me. He gave me so much. He absolutely did. Allen made it loose. That helped me enormously.â
Allenâs essay includes recollections of their time together outside work, including a notable Thanksgiving enjoying a game with her family, and says of their relationship: âWe had a many memorable private moments together and eventually we both parted paths, and the reason for our separation only divine and analytical forces might be able to understand.â
